Dear Bacon,
I've thought it over and I've decided I want a break. I've loved you for a very long time and we've shared many fantastic moments but damn, Bacon, you have gotten so annoying so fast. You are EVERYWHERE. At first your popularity was cute... and I liked it. Everyone wanted to be around you. The chocolate thing was actually good, vodka is iffy, but Torani Syrup? Really? That's nasty, Bacon. I know you make everything better but that doesn't mean you should take it so far. Anyways, although I need some space I hope we can still be friends--especially since we still have to work together--let me know if you want to meet up for breakfast sometime.

I've been meaning to update but just hadn't been able to find the time till now. We are so close folks! The popsicle production freezer ran into some problems last week that delayed us but we passed fire inspection last week and we will have our health department inspection Monday, city inspection Tuesday.

I'm working on all the finishing touches now and still figuring out what the customer area will look like as far as seating goes. I will probably just allow that space to evolve for now. Same goes for the menu but I better get crackin on a real menu draft. If you want to shoot me your requests, please do!

Thank you to everyone sending their positive energy my way. You all keep me going and motivated and I appreciate it so very dang much.

From the UC Davis Student Farm:

The 9th Annual Davis Okra Cook-Off is On!

Friday, September 11, 5:00-8:00 pm at the Student Farm Market Garden Packing Shed Picnic Area

Bring a dish containing okra or something else to share such as bread, rice, drinks, fruit, or apple pie(!) As usual we’ll ask okra chefs to describe their dishes and then let all interested okra

Events from the past that may resurface: Singing the Okra Anthem and Okracoma, The Miss Okra Contest,

Possible New Events if we are inspired: Book Club announcement by “Okra Winfrey”, sharing a farming/gardening story or moment from the past year.

Meet us out at the Student Farm Market Garden Packing Shed Area. We will purchase some okra from Pedrick Produce and have that available for participating okra chefs starting Wednesday 9/9 at noon in the foyer of the Student Farm Fieldhouse. (Unfortunately the Student Farm okra production has been significantly weakened the last few years by nematodes.)

Anyone interested in okra, the Student Farm or hanging with dry dusty farmers and gardeners at the end of summer is welcome. eaters vote on their favorites.

Art Farm: an exhibition inspired by the farmlands of Yolo County

From my friend Annie Main at Good Humus Farm who is always doing great things:

"ART FARM is up and for the viewing in the County offices in Woodland; it is a wonderful show with over 80 pieces of art inspired by Yolo County farm landscapes. This years fundraising sale for farm land preservation will be on Friday October 2^nd. Take a look at the postcard attached and mark your calendar, and I hope to see you there!"

I'm planning to donate popsicles and an appetizer for this event along with Tucos Wine Market & Cafe and Monticello Bistro. Come out for farm-inspired local art, food and wine (they are asking for a $10 donation at the door).

Capay Candystripe Fig & the Eat Real Fest

Our pals up at Capay Organic grow some neat lil figs. Also called tiger or raspberry fig. They're vibrantly streaked yellow and green with a deep and tasty red interior. The flavor is sweeter and more jam-like to me than other figs.

Fran from the farm really wanted me to make a pop out of these beauties and lucky for me wouldn't stop bothering me about it. So they got sauteed in brown butter, sugar, and port then blended up with a bit of arugula. I made a batch of creme fraiche to go with it swirl-style.

They made their debut last weekend at the Eat Real Fest in Oakland and got mentioned and pictured in SFoodie!
